About OCD
Obsessions, compulsions and the loop between them
Obsessive-compulsive disorder pairs unwanted, distressing thoughts with rituals that briefly quiet them. The relief never lasts, so the loop tightens. In children it often shows up as reassurance-seeking, rigid routines and distress when things are not just so.
The most effective treatment is Exposure and Response Prevention. With your therapist you approach the feared thought or situation in small, planned steps and practice not doing the ritual, until the anxiety loses its grip. Our clinicians trained in ERP guide the pace.
For young children, the SPACE program works through parents. You learn to stop accommodating the OCD at home while staying warm and supportive, which research shows reduces symptoms.
