Benefits of teletherapy
for counseling
Teletherapy, or online/video counseling, is as simple as completing electronic paperwork and downloading the secure app that allows for telehealth. Due to our busy lives, teletherapy can ease the stress of trying to make it to an in-person appointment. Secure video counseling allows you to avoid interruptions to your schedule and still receive the same services as an in-person counseling session.
These online counseling sessions are offered to children, teens, and adults who have busy schedules, may live in remote areas, or have difficulty finding an experienced therapist near them. Not having to go to an in-person session can lower anxiety for those that may not feel comfortable driving or sitting in a waiting room full of people.
Teletherapy, or online counseling, is an innovative way of providing and receiving mental health services. It’s therapy from the comfort of your safe space, on your time. Teletherapy offers flexibility and comfort, literally meeting you where you’re at.
Key benefits of Telehealth
Convenience! You don’t have to leave your home (or even put on shoes).
Comfort level. Some people may feel more comfortable receiving treatment in their own spaces.
Access to providers you may have difficulty visiting in person.
Built-in social distancing when you or a family member are ill.
Benefits of teletherapy
for speech therapy
Telehealth speech therapy provides for greater involvement of family members in sessions and allows the therapist to see the client in their home environment.
Telehealth speech therapy ensures consistent service for clients who live far away or otherwise have difficulty getting to the clinic. Clinicians will be able to continue having sessions in bad weather, and parents will not have to cancel sessions if they cannot find childcare for siblings.
Technology has been proven to be more motivating for children in speech therapy. Online sessions can help remove distractions for some patients. Additionally, many clients are easily able to navigate this format independently.
Evidence has shown that clients are making gains with telehealth.
Many of the materials used for intervention have now been adapted to a telehealth format.
Benefits of teletherapy
for occupational therapy
Telehealth OT is beneficial for clients who need to work on activities of daily living and daily routines because the best place for kids to do that is at home. Environment makes a difference, and using the tools and rooms that kids would use daily can make a huge difference in treatment progress.
Telehealth OT can benefit clients of just about any age and stage of development, especially if a caregiver is available to participate. Having the caregiver present in the session helps make the therapy more specific to the child's/family's needs, which usually results in faster progress.
Even sensory and motor skills can be effectively addressed at home because it is more functional to use objects that a child has available to them all the time instead of equipment in a clinic that is not always readily available to most families. Children with a range of diagnoses have made significant progress using telehealth OT!
Is teletherapy confidential and private?
Touchstone Therapy Center uses a secure HIPPA-compliant video platform that is accessible from your computer or smartphone.
How to improve your teletherapy experience
Make sure you are in a quiet space where you won’t be disturbed or heard. This may be in a bedroom, home office, basement, a large closet, or even in your parked car.
If you live with others, ask that they don’t disturb you during your session time and refrain from using the Wi-Fi so that your connection is not slowed down.
Consider putting a white noise machine, small fan, or speaker with music playing outside of the door to the room you will be in so that roommates or family members cannot overhear your conversation.
Ensure the device you are using (a computer, tablet, or smartphone) has a working camera and microphone and is fully charged.
Consider using headphones or earbuds plugged into your device to improve sound quality and maintain privacy.
Teletherapy sessions must be arranged with you and your provider 24 hours in advance prior to your scheduled session.
When is teletherapy not a suitable option?
While telehealth increases opportunity and comfort for accessing therapy, there are some restrictions. Teletherapy may not be a suitable option if:
For Children
- They are unable to sit still for long periods of time
- They have trouble focusing with screens
- They are easily distractable
- There is difficulty engaging with their therapist
- The child cannot participate without parent intervention (if not in family therapy)
For Adults
- You are in an acute crisis and require a higher level of care.
- You don’t have Internet access, or the connection is unstable or slow.
- You are in an active state of addiction or eating disorder.
- You lack privacy in your home or office.
- You are in a moving vehicle—your safety is important to us.
